The province enjoys a dry climate and very mild winters. Almería,
the capital city of the province, is officially recognized
as Europe's sunniest city with an average of over 3,000 hours
of sunshine a year. Perhaps partly because of its climate
the province of Almería is able to offer the visitor
or resident a full range of leisure activities such as golf,
tennis, horse riding, walking, scuba diving and windsurfing
that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Despite growing in popularity the province of Almería is still
a quiet area that is not overdeveloped. It continues to retain
its Spanish essence and is an area that is fiercely proud
of its social and historic heritage, making Almería
a wonderful place to explore.
Some 90 kilometres from the city of Almería is the enchanting
town of Mojácar. This town is divided in to two parts,
Mojácar pueblo, which is the old town, and Mojácar
playa, the more recent development of the beach area of Mojácar.
It is considered to be one of the most picturesque towns along
the Andalucían coastline.
The old town of Mojácar shimmers from the distance and
the distinct Moorish influence is apparent. In 1488 the town
was taken by the Christians and the Moors were later expelled,
though still to this day Mojácar re-enacts this battle
between the Moors and Christians in a weekend-long fiesta
every year.
Like many other towns in South-Eastern Spain Mojácar fell
to ruin in the 1960s as much of its population immigrated
to the wealthier Northern provinces. However, the mayor attracted
new residents by promising free land to anyone who pledged
to build and Mojácar became a thriving art colony.
The old town is a Moorish village with twisting cobbled streets,
old arches and domed houses cascading down the hilltop and
overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Below is Mojácar
playa, which boasts 17 kilometres of unspoilt beaches and
three European flags for cleanliness.
Mojácar has a full range of services including schools, doctors, supermarkets,
shops and restaurants, and is very close to several golf courses
in the area. Despite a steady growth in tourism the awesome
backdrop of the mountains and the beauty of the beach remain
due to a two-storey building restriction along the playa.
A short drive away from Mojácar is the mountainous
coastline Cabo de Gata, a state protected nature reserve.
This is well worth visiting for its quiet, beautiful beaches
and crystal-clear waters set against the dramatic backdrop
of the mountains.
